What We’re About

Representing Our Community
JAKing live, work, and play in the Toronto neighborhood of Jane-Finch. This area is home to people of many backgrounds and origins. Jane-Finch may not be the richest neighborhood, but everyone works hard and dreams of a better life for all. JAKing’s music reflects our neighborhood (learn more under “Music”). Our goal is to draw positive attention to the area, with a focus on the many creative people who live here. And when something doesn’t seem right, we try to shine a light and discuss the issues.

Getting Involved
JAKing wants to help our community help itself. That means getting everyone involved in the decision-making process. Stand up for our rights, stand up for justice, be accountable, and hold others accountable. We all have a voice, let’s use it. Together let’s call for positive change, and call for positive action. We must all come together and work together, because while a house divided will fall, a people divided can’t build anything worthwhile.

|
Seeing the Bigger Picture
JAKing goes beyond Jane-Finch, because we see the big picture. Decisions get made at many levels, and this affects all of us. Whether the issue is local, national, or global, sooner or later, it all comes back to us. Don’t think you can escape it. If you don’t get involved, you hand over control to others. If you don’t stand up and say what you want, others will make the decisions for you. Don’t expect them to look out for your best interests.

|
Music is the message
JAKing uses music to get the point across. Music can entertain, music can inform, and we try to do both. Music can point out problems, music can point out solutions. Music can spark discussions, music can celebrate successful resolutions, music can launch revolutions. Music is life and hope.

Staying Positive
JAKing wants to accentuate the positive. It’s too easy to shrug shoulders and walk away, or to dismiss an entire area based on selected events. Sometimes we wonder if there’s an agenda at work when an area gets painted with a particular reputation. We call it “horrification”. Hope is what makes life worth living. Nurture hope and it will flourish. Expect the worst and that’s what you’ll get.
