Crushing Chords

A Tune’s Tale

If you really want to know what goes through the mind of Angelo Furlan when he’s not thinking up Sinnamon stories, go no further. His brain is a buzzy place, filled with strange sounds and mangled melodies.   Here’s a sample from that sonic swamp.

Every now and then, I like to kick back and play my guitar.  Unfortunately for people with good hearing, every now and then I like to record my musical musings for posterity’s sake.  Also, it’s actually quite a bit of fun to experiment with mixing down various tracks.

This particular song was put together with the help of a few pieces of software.  I used Jammer Pro to compose all the original backing tracks. Jammer is a cool program.  All you have to do is enter the chords and it generates music in any of a number of styles.  I use this backing song to play along with, but by the time I was done, only the drum tracks survived.

Jammer allows you to save the finished tune as a MIDI file. In order to use this file, I had to convert it to a wave file. I just came across a great program called Synthfont.  This program lets you use Soundfonts in place of your MIDI instruments. If you’ve got some good soundfonts, this will greatly improve your overall sound.

I did my recording and mixing with a program called Kristal. This program is easy to figure out and has a great deal of flexibility. It may not have all the bells and whistles, but you can’t beat the price - free!

This page is about making music, but all the same, if you want to buy a comic, might I suggest you try this one?  Click on the cover to buy!

As for the non-digital bits, all guitar parts were done with my Stratocaster.  I used a Danelectro Longhorn for the bass. And if you’re wondering about the song’s title, the reason I did this song in the first place was to check out the tonal qualities of my latest guitar pedal purchase: the Danelectro DJ-10 Grilled Cheese. Every guitar part went through the DJ-10. The guitar part pulsing from one channel was given a taste of Danelectro’s Tuna Melt Tremolo pedal.  I suppose I could have called the song, “Who Melted the Grilled Cheese”, but even comic book writers with delusions of musical adequacy have their limits.
