Shon C. Bury's Threshold

Would you cross the threshold?

You look outside your window at the drab, mundane world, and you know—deep inside—there must be a larger world. A world of mystery. A world of adventure. A world of magic. You know the door to that world awaits you. Calls to you in  your dreams. But where is it? If you had the means to find the door, would you cross the threshold?

After a six-year hiatus, comic-book veteran Shon C. Bury returns to ask readers those same questions—and to provide answers with Threshold. Shon cites his love for comic books and mythology for his creation and says, “Threshold was absolutely a product of of a lifetime of reading and studying both comics and mythology—and my desire to combine the two. I set out to tell a modern version of Joseph Campbell’s Hero Cycle as a comic book, using (almost) ordinary characters responding to extraordinary situations. The result was Threshold.”

Things felling into place when Shon saw the art of Sequential Studios’ Allan Goldman. “Allan’s a veteran Brazilian penciler. I had several properties I was interested in developing besides Threshold when I approached S2, but when I saw Allan’s art I knew he was perfect for this book.”

Shon had a very specific tone in mind. With Allan on pencils, he only needed a colorist to complete his creative team and his vision. “Allan’s pencils are so perfect, I couldn’t risk having them inked. I needed a colorist who was willing to work straight from pencils.” That man was Ed Waysek. Another newcomer to the industry, Ed Waysek is a graphic artist and graduate of the Kubert School of Art. “Ed’s a complete champ and understands the feel I’m shooting for completely.”

“Threshold’s a road trip story,” Shon laughs. “It’s as much about the journey as it is the destination. We’ve all read a million comics and seen a thousand movies. We all know how things will end…so why not focus on the getting to that end?” With that in mind, protagonist—and Comparative-Mythology student—Joey King was created. Joey’s fully aware his footsteps where mapped thousands of years before he ever read Hero with a Thousand Faces. In this way, Threshold is a self-aware, low fantasy populated equally by mystical gurus, urban hipsters, Everyman characters, and dark forces bent on tipping our drab, mundane world into the shadows.

But he can’t save the world alone, so join us. We dare you. It’s just one small step...

Cross the threshold.
